15:39 : Weed in the News
[ link | (0) ]
Paid in Full (Metroactive Music): Better still is a new peer-to-peer music-distribution software company called Weed. Music fans can download tracks and get three free spins; they are then encouraged to buy the song for unlimited burns. Jellyfish's Roger Manning recently recorded some new songs and put them up on the Weedshare. With one email to a Jellyfish message board directing fans to the site, Weed claims to have made $256 in three days with no tangible CDs, no advertising, no printing costs, no overhead. The copyright holder receives 50 percent royalty rate, Weed gets 15 percent service and software costs and the fan that passes the music along gets 20 percent commission if a friend buys the track. The remaining 15 percent is divided among other file-sharers along the way. Fanning seemed visibly gassed when mentioning Weed, as if he stepped in the slowest line at Costco. Weed's payment structure was the direction Napster should have gone. The Need for Weed (Playlist): (...) The advantage it shares with other multi-level marketing schemes is that it provides monetary motivation for users to spread the material around. Best of all, the artist is fairly compensated.
If you're an artist or music consumer, it's worth checking out. Indie labels mine Internet distribution (BusinessWeekOnline), and File-Sharing Case Worries Indie Artists (Yahoo! News): John Beezer, president of Weed-creator Shared Media Licensing Inc. in Seattle, estimates that fewer than 100,000 tracks have been sold in the 18 months since the software went into use. Beezer said more than 7,000 artists have offered their songs through Weed, and the vast majority aren't signed with recording labels.

11:40 : Artist of the day: Jennifer Brantley
[ link | (0) ]
 | Jennifer Brantley Nashville, Tennessee, USAJennifer was born in Mississippi and raised in California. She was also born a musician. She began hammering on the piano at age one. Both of her parents were musicians and encouraged her to start taking piano at age six. She wrote and recorded her first song at age ten, using an old reel to reel. She later her taught herself to play guitar as well. Jennifer began her performances playing gospel. The church was a big influence on her early songwriting as well. She played with her sisters in churches and various venues opening for acts like David and the Giants. « Growing up in Mississippi and California you get exposed to quite a lot musically and culturally. » Since moving to Nashville in December 2001, Jennifer has quickly gained the respect of the Music City's performing community. In November of 2002, she was asked to be a member of Folks Wagon Beatles, an Americana version of the Opry that features some of Nashville's Hottest new talent, as well as some seasoned established veteran players. Her dead on vocal pitch and sweet harmonies have also made her a highly sought after back up vocalist in town, as well. Song craft is the key ingredient in Jennifer's material. Her lyrics and vocal melodies twist and turn bringing to mind that lost soothing warmth that can be heard in voices like Patsy Cline and Emmy Lou Harris. « Her warm, mournful and soul-piercing voice is interwoven into clever, hook-laden chord progressions. Like Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris and Gillain Welch she is one of those rare artists who can play what she feels and make the listener feel what she feels. » - Hattiesburg American | | |
Jennifer will be doing an in studio performance on WUTK Knoxville tonight at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time, and you can listen live at www.wutkradio.com. She will also be playing at The Preservation Pub later Friday night.

 | Namoli Brennet Arizona, USAGender-variant performer Namoli Brennet seeks to deconstruct the beauty myth of Western Culture. 13:58 : Artist of the day: Nothing More
[ link | (0) ]
 | Nothing More Texas, USAEscaping the barriers that bind the modern music scene and its subsidiaries is a rare and exceptionally beautiful juncture. And that is precisely where Nothing More's self-proclaimed « busy-rock » genre takes us. Locally acclaimed « The next big thing,» Nothing More seamlessly floats from a technical junkie's dream, to ballad avenue, and back again. « We've always wanted to 'rock-hard,' and that's never changed. But now we're interested in letting our music evolve and grow, and in the process we're binding together to create one musical-being from a group of musicians with a common passion » remarks drummer, Jonny Hawkins. « Putting together a great show is where every band has the opportunity to set themselves apart » observes guitarist, Josh Kercheville. « It's easy to see bands that just throw things together, buts it's even easier to see bands that believe in what they're doing and work hard at it. »” Such is the case when Noting More performs live. « The sound is kept together brilliantly, » a local journalist writes, « truly captivating the crowd with its intense rhythms, gripping melodies, and continuity that is dedicated to a larger concept. » | | |
