It's been a little while since the last edition, so without further ado here's another roundup of the recent, and not so recent, Weed related developments.

In the news

Artists Take Advantage of P2P Music Sharing:

With that distribution choice, Maitreya joins rock veterans Heart. The Sovereign Artists act is working with Weed to distribute tracks from its new album, "Jupiter's Darling," as well as an exclusive version of "Love Hurts." Rhythm Cartel's Sir Mix-A-Lot, best known for his 1992 hit "Baby Got Back," is another artist who chose to "Weedify" his music, to use the company's terminology.

Morpheus claims landmark P2P legal victory:

A US court has upheld the legitimacy of peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing application Morpheus, finding against 28 of the world's largest entertainment companies which had alleged that the P2P firm's software violates copyright law.

Music Industry Sues 744 More for File Sharing:

Since last September, the RIAA has sued more than 4,000 people in its efforts to combat piracy, which the music industry has blamed for a multiyear decline in CD sales. Some music fans have countered that bad music, and not piracy, was to blame for the decline.

Alan Horvath has signed a record deal with Statue Records:

Surprise, surprise, surprise! God knows how many record deals I've turned down in the past ... and He sure knows why, too. 104 new files have been uploaded to the server, including a bunch of new cuts from amazing multi-instrumentalist Billy Atwell, rapper Mateo Mblem, singer/songwriter Alicia Dara, and prog rockers Singularity.

5 new artists have also been added to the database:
  • Chadwick is enjoyed most after dark by people who've forgotten to take their prozac, but if you want to listen anyway,  Three Kids is recommended.
  • Dragonica is Victor Garcia, an artist with a multicultural background who explores the world of dance and electronica. Here's some  Indian Chant for you.
  • Spawned from a dirty rehearsal hole in Brooklyn NY, In Fervor have been commanding attention with their intense shows all over NYC and beyond. Their album « Anatomy Of A Memory » has been received rave reviews, and I suggest  Wheels To Turn as a good starting point in your discovery of this passionate bunch of rock'n'rollers. And for the privileged among you who reside in the NYC area, here's your chance of experiencing them live: the band will be performing with Next Tribe at Hank's Saloon on 8.26.04. It'll be fun, it'll be loud, but best of all it'll be free.
  • Can you imagine Erik Satie, Ravi Shankar, Joe Zawinul and Buck Owens getting together with Bugs Bunny, some of John Coltrane's band from Ascension, Bela Bartok sitting in on string quartet and 200 chanting chipmunks? Well, the primeTime sublime Community Orchestra certainly can! Wanna taste a little  Pomp & Vindaloo?
  • OHM offers a glorious collision of electronica and guitar pop. The brilliant, self-directed (and uncensored) video to  Forget who we are, a spectacular collage of wit and skepticism, captures the zeitgeist perfectly and has been added to TV stations across the world. It was featured on Apple.com, was voted Independent Video of the year in the UK and was recently video of the week in the prestigious London Times.
And speaking of videos, here's  Bella Faccina, straight from the creative genius of Sananda Maitreya, who in a past life was known as Terence Trent D'Arby.

Enjoy, and remember to share!

Lance Hayes, (AKA DJDM & DJ Drunken Master), bought his first keyboard, (a Juno 106), when he was 12. Since then his studio, « Hell's Gate, » has gone from analog tech to digi-tech. The current configuration is computer based with Reason, (triggered by a D-50), and Cubase being his primary instruments.

Suggested tracks:

Pillars of Versailles,  Selena,  Butterflyed Eyes, and  Blood Red My Shovel (Darklight mix), which DJDM remixed for The Fading Collection.

See DJ Drunken Master's artist page for more.

In depth interview:

Lance has been chosen the Reason User for the month of August and an in depth interview conducted by Marsha Vdovin, « The truth behind DJ Drunken Master, » is available on the Propellerhead Software website. Here are some excerpts:

Do you think that working in the computer enhances or inhibits your creativity?

Enhances! For me computers do this by minimizing the time technical processes required to make and record music. In my hardware studio there were lots of labor intensive jobs like managing files, finding loop points, plugging in gear, checking wiring etc. To me setting up audio files on samplers and creating sounds on my synths for tracks in a traditional hardware environment was extremely time consuming and not always very inspiring as compared to the actual playing or mixing. Now the way I am able to manage new samples, sounds and loops quickly in Reason and ReCycle as well as create new outboard gear and devices without stopping for twenty minutes to hook it up is undeniably the single greatest benefit the software revolution has brought to my work flow.

Do you make a living making music?

I do. For better or for worse I am a full-time freelance composer and occasional producer/audio guy. Much of my work comes in the form of backgrounds and beds for various media projects. I also subsidize by picking odd jobs doing general audio and I have been lucky enough to work on a few indie film projects as well.

Latest news:
  • Lance is currently working on the theme music for the stellar folks at Seattle Neutrino Project.
  • Nordstrom retailers recently used a couple of his pieces for a national employee training video.
  • 8 of his tracks have been featured in a National Geographic Special entitled « Miracle Venom. »
  • 6 of his tracks will be included in The Matrix DVD box set due out this coming fall.
  • And he is working on an EP project of his own music for a fall-spring release.
Enjoy the music and don't forget to share!

There's no easy way to describe the immense and wildly varied talent that Billy Atwell possesses. He is a modern-day renaissance man, a multi-instrumentalist of stunning range. He's a complex composer, with deep roots in punk... and he sports a tattoo of Mozart on his arm. Billy crafts the most amazing filmic soundscapes that bring to mind the works of Bill Laswell, Cliff Martinez, and David Torn. You need to listen to a number of tracks to fully begin to understand. One moment you'll be treated to a deeply textured, multi-layered piece only to be stunned the next moment by a dark and edgy wall of sound. His music spans the entire gamut of color and emotion... and the most remarkable feat is that he plays all the instruments, creates all the loops and is the engineer as well.

- Daniel House (DownloadWeed.com)

Suggested tracks:

Army of One,   The Scarlet Letter,  and   Needle Point, which is currently the top download at www.sharenewyork.com.

See Billy's artist page for more.

In the press:

An interview by The Dominion Post's Michelle Wolford: Morgantown grad plans live Webcast of his N.Y. trio.

Latest news:

Billy will be debuting Blanche Mayhem, a new 100% improv group, this Wednesday August 11th at 8PM Eastern Standard Time. The event will be simulcast over the Internet from www.strangebrew.com. The format will be a trio composed of Howard Harrison on guitar, Matt Volpe on bass, and Billy on drum kit, percussion, lapsteel guitar, and didjeridoo. As he puts it himself:

The music will be immediate and raw as we'll grab whatever threads are available to create the instant motif and improvise accordingly. Watercolor ballets and blue spark train derailments, no doubt.

The opportunity will exist to write in and chat, though our replies will be through the audio feed.

It's also the eve of my 38th birthday. Send premium tequilla shots!

Enjoy the music and don't forget to share!

The Weed Files is proud to introduce Gary Nielsen to the Weed community!

Singing since the age of five, it was always a passion for him. Nielsen has taken lessons at six and even had the chance to perform in elementary school, but due to budget cuts, the school had to discontinue the program - and his singing teacher, who believed and encouraged him, as well.

« It became an empty part of my life for a long time, » he says. Unfortunately, this has become a common occurrence in schools throughout America.

Nielsen wasn't deterred for very long, however, earning a degree in writing and continuing to write both words and music. He began playing the guitar eight years ago. He says that it was a difficult path, learning the way he did. However, he's comfortable enough with it these days and writes all the melodies to his songs, personally playing the rhythm guitar tracks on his recordings. He likens his creative process to the way authors wrote books during the Nineteenth Century, specifically Charles Dickens, who often published his novels several chapters at a time.

While Nielsen is the driving force behind the music, he often invites others into the studio for the recording sessions, and he has had musicians as diverse as John Fiore, Geoff Baker, and Pete Shiffman assisting in guitar and bass work but credits most of the shaping of the sound to Mike Bedford.

When asked about his musical vision, Nielsen had this to say:

It's too complex to sum up in one word. I know rock is so much about rebellion, but there is a need for someone to look occasionally at the positive side as well. Not that all my tunes are positive. 'Where Have I Gone?' is centered on disillusionment with my own sense of accomplishment. Yet, 'Believe In Yourself' is a broad side at trying to find what is good in one's self. While a more current tune 'American Life Jam?' is a sarcastic look at today's middle class society, one which I reside in.

Make sure you give a listen to our favorites:
